LRV Contrast Calculator
As an industry rule of thumb, a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) contrast of 65% or more between sign text and background colors is an ideal guideline to follow when evaluating color options.
Light reflectance values for ASI standard colors are provided in our Standard Color Chart. Most major paint manufacturers include the LRV for colors in their swatch books. These values, along with ours, can be used in the manual calculation for LRV contrast, shown in the formula to the right.
Contrast = ( B1 – B2 ) x 100 / B1
B1 = light reflectance value of lighter area
B2 = light reflectance value of darker area
